Anti corrosion stepper motors
Thanks to a special technology, the protective coating on the inside and outside of the motors is treated in such a way as to make these Moons’ motors resistant to rust and corrosion, making them ideal for applications on aircraft, ships, cars, antennas, solar equipment and others.
What are the main advantages?
- Corrosion resistance
- Rust resistance
- NEMA sizes 17 – 23
- The motors are highly customisable for every application requirement
- Customisations available for wiring, shaft, winding, bearings, etc.
Electric motors used outdoors are susceptible to sometimes extreme temperatures and moisture accumulation. These factors cause internal corrosion, which can lead to component failure.
Traditionally, attempts were made to solve the problem by sealing the motor to prevent moisture from reaching internal components.
Unfortunately, it has been noted that shaft and terminal seals can only delay the onset of the phenomenon, but not stop the appearance of moisture in the engine. Furthermore, the presence of shaft seals causes a loss of 3 to 15 per cent of torque due to friction.
Today, a new approach is used to prevent corrosion and early failure by using a system of effective linings. Moons’ new technology applies a protective coating to every surface and structure inside and outside the motor; including the rotor, stator and housing. All surfaces that could potentially rust are therefore covered.
Stepper motors available with anti-corrosion treatment are NEMA 17 and NEMA 23.

The experiment
An experiment was conducted to test Moons’ stepper motors with anti corrosion coatings, and American Standard MIL-STD-202G salt spray was used.
The resistance of the new Moons’ coatings was tested in an accelerated corrosion test with military standards.
Conventional stepper motor

96 hours after the salt spray test, extensive corrosion can be seen, the rotor is blocked and the motor is no longer able to run.
MOONS’ anti corrosion stepper motor

A full 240 hours after exposure to salt spray, the motor is completely normal and runs smoothly.
